Emergencies >> Urinary tract  obstruction

Background:

Tumors (primary tumors, metastases) compress the urinary tract

Symptoms:

Oliguria/anuria, Pain in the region of bladder or kidneys

Diagnosis and therapy:

1. Physicial examination
2. Ultrasound: Full bladder? Distended ureters? Renal congestion?
3. Urology consult (if neccessary for internal / external drainage)
4. In case of bladder dysfunction, place catheter. If catheter cannot be inserted due to obstruction, consider suprapubic puncture (use ultrasound and a venous catheter for fast relief)
5. Treatment of underlying condition
6. Balance fluids (input/output)
